A busy week has been had by all as Burford School have been venturing around New Zealand!
After a day exploring Auckland, taking in the breath-taking views from Mount Eden and the Skytower, we headed to our next hosts at Massey High School, near Waitakere. The picture above is taken from Lake Waitakere, where the team enjoyed an hour’s sightseeing, before embarking on their next set of matches. A successful session for the hockey team, with a draw and a win, followed by a win for the football team. The netball team put in another sterling effort, but were unfortunately beaten by their opponents.
The next day took us off to Cambridge and the next set of hosts: Cambridge High School. On the back of the previous days matches, all the teams put in strong performances against their hosts; the hockey team continued their winning streak, winning 1-0, whilst unfortunately the football and netball teams were not victorious this time.
As Friday arrived, we made our way off to Rotorua, aptly nicknamed ‘Sulpher City’! After a walk around a park full of mud pools, and a spot of lunch, we were treated to a jade carving demonstration, before checking in to our hotel, where much fun was had in the thermal pools! This evening’s entertainment was simply outstanding! We headed off to a traditional Maori Hangi, to learn about the history of the Maori tribes. We were treated to a host of fascinating demonstrations and fun activities, including learning how to perform the Haka! The evening closed with an unbelievable feast, cooked for us in the traditional Maori way, alongside some award-winning singing and dancing!
On Saturday we ventured out and about for a busy day of local sightseeing. First stop was the Agrodome, where we were thoroughly entertained by one of the most remarkable shows we have all ever seen. There was even a waving sheep! Next stop was Rainbow Springs, where we got our first glimpse of the notorious kiwi bird! Then we were off to the Te Puia Thermal Reserve, Whakarewarewa, where we saw mud pools, steaming hot springs and the famous Pohutu Geyser erupting! The day wasn’t over yet, with some people enjoying a ride on Skyline Gondola and Luge, whilst others went for a relaxing dip in the thermal pools of the Blue Baths. Finally, an evening of bowling, with Jeremy Kirby and Toby Harrison-Turner putting in some outstanding top scores!
Which brings us to today! We’ve travelled on to Tauranga, and have enjoyed some time on the beach, before the hockey girls took on the mighty Otumoetai College, and were unfortunately defeated 5-0. All have departed to their new billets happy and excited about their next set of adventures!
Fingers crossed for some more victories tomorrow!
I’ve just uploaded a few pictures from our last few days surfing, whale watching and arriving in Auckland. An amazing few days has been had by all! Enjoy! x
